If you’ve ever wondered whether a mini-session is the right fit for your family, you’re not alone! Mini-sessions are popular for a reason—they’re quick, efficient, and great for capturing those must-have shots without a big time or financial commitment. But they aren’t always the best choice for every family or situation.
I personally didn’t try a mini-session for my family until I was gifted one. My kids were in 5th grade, 3rd grade & kindergarten and I knew everyone could get into “having fun” mode quickly. Needless to say they loved it. And while I adore the images we got from that session (it was our first in San Luis Obispo) I still prefer a full session because of the gallery variety. Since then we have gone back and forth with mini’s and full sessions.
Let’s break down why mini-sessions can be amazing and why, sometimes, a full session might be a better fit.
Why Mini-Sessions Are a Great Idea:
- Quick and Efficient: Perfect for busy families who need beautiful photos without dedicating a whole hour. Ideal for capturing quick updates like birthdays or seasonal changes without committing to a full-length session.
- Holiday Card Goals Achieved: If your primary goal is to get that one show-stopping photo for a Christmas card or social media, minis are a good way to achieve those goals.
- Budget-Friendly: Since mini-sessions are typically more affordable than full sessions, they’re a great option for families who want quality photos without the higher investment.
- Great for Older Kids: If your kids warm up fast or are naturally comfortable in front of the camera, you’ll have no problem getting gorgeous shots in the limited time.
- Test the Waters: Great for new clients who want to experience working with a photographer before investing in a full session.
When Mini-Sessions Might Not Be Ideal:
- Shy or Reserved Kids: If your little ones, or Dad, takes a while to warm up, they might not feel comfortable in such a short amount of time, resulting in stiff or hesitant smiles. Real, meaningful interactions often take time to unfold, and a full session allows for those genuine moments to naturally happen.
- Diverse Gallery Desired: If you’re dreaming of a wide range of candid, posed, and detail shots that tell a full story, it is often hard to achieve this in a mini-session.
- Complex Group Dynamics: Juggling multiple kids, pets, or extended family members? A longer session is usually more successful at getting everyone looking their best!
- Creative Freedom: A full session gives your photographer more time to play with light, settings, and poses, leading to a diverse and artistic gallery. Sometimes the best images come at the end of a photo session when everyone has settled into being themselves and having fun.
- No Customization: Minis are usually done at a set location with a set time frame, so if you’re dreaming of a personalized vibe or unique spot, a full session is the way to go.
So, What’s Right for Your Family?
The best choice comes down to your goals and your family’s personality. If you’re just looking for a quick update or a holiday card shot, minis are a fantastic option! But if you’re craving a gallery that truly tells your family’s story, a full session might be worth the investment. Whatever you decide, the most important thing is to choose a session that aligns with your vision—and to have fun while doing it! Your family’s connection and joy deserves to be captured in a way that feels right for you.
